Anniversary of the Counterpublic 2023 Closing Weekend

Happy Hour at the Greenfinch

Date: Sunday, July 14, 2024

Time: 5-7:30 PM

Location: Greenfinch Theater & Dive, 2525 S Jefferson Ave, St. Louis, MO 63104

In July of last year, the Counterpublic 2023 Exhibition came to a close. During that weekend, the Greenfinch hosted “The Gathering,” two nights of performances, lectures, screenings, and more, coordinated by New Red Order.

Meet us back at the Greenfinch on Sunday, July 14th, to reconnect/meet our team and celebrate where we’ve been and where we’re heading. We’re excited to hear your feedback, what you’d like to see in the years to come, and how we can show up for your communities.

Drinks on us, feedback on you! Please RSVP using the form below.

GrassRoots Plant Walk

Time: 6-6:30 PM

During this happy hour, we invite you to join a neighborhood plant walk led by Rico Rose as part of GrassRoots.

GrassRoots is a workshop designed to reconnect individuals with their environment by teaching them to identify plants commonly found in urban and suburban areas. It integrates Indigenous perspectives and provides a brief historical context, enhancing awareness of their cultural importance and the ecological roles of the plants we most frequently encounter. The approach emphasizes starting with easily accessible and visible plants and highlights that regardless of location, we are integral parts of the natural world, not separate from it.

By focusing on readily available plants, GrassRoots aims to make nature appreciation inclusive and accessible to everyone, irrespective of their location or background. The workshop's goal is to provide a starting point, sparking curiosity, encouraging exploration, and planting seeds of inspiration to develop a deeper interest in advanced plant identification, foraging, conservation activism, or simply fostering a closer engagement with their community.

Rico Rose (Diné) is an Indigenous community member of the Indigenous St. Louis Working Group, committed to providing leadership and support for developing strategies that promote Indigenous inclusion and cultural revitalization in spaces and events across the broader Saint Louis region. With a background as a local horticulturist specializing in native plants and sustainable landscaping, and as an entry-level programmer utilizing digital networking and databases for Indigenous food sovereignty, seed rematriation projects, and land stewardship initiatives, they bring a unique perspective and passion for questioning the status quo of current cultural practices.

When not volunteering or assisting with community-based initiatives, they can be found dominating their spouse at Scrabble and practicing for speed puzzling events at local coffee venues.
